The Zaan region excites, surprises and amazes. Art and culture play an important role in this. Our lively region is full of creators, including many art and culture makers.

That link with art and culture goes way back. To the mills that ground the paint pigments for the great masters and at the same time inspired them. While the future is not forgotten either in the incubators that provide space for discovery and experimentation.

Monet in Zaandam

In 1871, Claude Monet visited Zaandam. The famous French painter was impressed by the Dutch lowlands, the characteristic wooden houses, many windmills and river Zaan. So much so that he decided to spend four months there. During that time, he produced 25 paintings and nine sketches, of which his Zaan work 'The Voorzaan and the Westerhem' has been on display at the Zaans Museum since 2015.
