Maas, Waal en De Schepel
On the Zaan, amid an industrial landscape where the food, oil and timber industries once flourished, stands the detached wooden warehouse 'De Schepel'. On the Zaan, amid an industrial landscape where the food, oil and timber industries once flourished, stands the detached wooden warehouse 'De Schepel'. This unique structure was erected in artisan-traditional style and has a long history dating back to the 19th century. At the time, the original warehouse was attached to oil mill 'De Schepel' and was rebuilt in 1875 after the mill itself was demolished. Since then, it has retained its function as a warehouse and contributes to the authentic character of the Zaan banks.
With its long façade directly bordering the water, 'De Schepel' forms a picture-defining element along the Zaan, where shipping was indispensable for industrial activity at the time. Together with the warehouses 'Maas' (Veerdijk 23) and 'Waal' (Veerdijk 24), located to its west, 'De Schepel' forms a historical ensemble symbolising an era of artisanal production and water-bound transport. The warehouse remains a silent witness to the industrial wealth that once dominated the Zaan banks.
Alderman Peter Kooij would prefer to see the warehouses maintained in their current location. "You shouldn't drag national monuments around. They should be restored on site. We are looking for a long-term solution."
That is also the opinion of restoration expert Bart Nieuwenhuijsen from Westzaan. Together with the municipality of Wormerveer, he has developed a rescue plan to restore the warehouses on site. "For example, they could serve as workshops, classrooms and storage of old building materials. They could also be given an educational function, as an example of traditional timber construction used in industry."
