For lovers of architecture, a visit to the Zaan region is more than worthwhile. You'll see a multitude of styles here.
Besides authentic timber buildings, you will find modern interpretations of the same style and industrial heritage has been beautifully repurposed.

Architecture walk

Join an Archiguide from architecture platform Babel on a tour of old and new Zaandam. The guide will take you through the fascinating background of the city centre's makeover.

But buildings from the past are also given full attention. Some only decades old, others almost a century or even older, such as the work of city architect L.J. Immink.

Century of architectural styles

The Hembrug Museum organises a guided tour of the Hembrug terrain every month. This terrain once formed the heart of the Stelling van Amsterdam, the defence line around our capital.

The abandoned buildings and restored monuments on this site together represent a century's worth of architectural styles.

Cycling past monuments

Interested in the world-famous Zaanse timber construction and other historical building styles? Stadsherstel offers a route along 42 restored Zaanse monuments with a story.

The route runs from Zaanse Schans Station to Zaandam Station, where you can park and rent a bike if needed. More routes and cycling information on our cycling page.
