    Smart on the way to SAIL Amsterdam from the Zaan region

SAIL will take place from Wednesday 20 to Sunday 24 August 2025. Highlights are the SAIL-In on 20 August and the SAIL-Out on 24 August

 

Sail in Zaandam

Sail Amsterdam is coming - and that means the Zaan region will also be all about impressive tall ships and cosiness along the waterfront.

Every five years, the world's finest sailing ships moor in the port of Amsterdam, and many of them pass through the North Sea Canal. From several spots in the Zaan region, you have the perfect view to watch this unique fleet pass by - without the hustle and bustle of the city.

  • Metro + train

    • Extra NS trains run to Amsterdam Centraal, but these can be busy - avoid rush hour and check your journey just in advance via NS

    • Those travelling from the Zaan region: get on in Zaandam and catch the shuttle bus towards SAIL. Buses run every 15 min to Kanaalkade stop, return approx. €5

  • Alternative via bus and metro

    • From Zaandam, you can also travel on with regular GVB lines (plan via 9292.nl)

    • Metro 52 (North-South line) stays open and gets you quickly to implicit locations in Amsterdam North

  • Parking in Zaanstad

    • Use P+R lots such as Hoogtij Zaanstad or Spaarnwoude (€15/car), advance booking recommended.

    • From Hoogtij it is about a 20-30 min walk to the Kanaalkade

    • Follow the yellow signs, not your navigation - some roads are closed or only accessible with special passes

  • Walking

Additional tips for visitors from the Zaan region

  • Leave on time on 20 and 24 August - that's when the passages (In/Out) are busiest

  • Bring plenty of water and a chair or rug - first aid and toilet facilities are available along the North Sea Canal

  • Leave the car as soon as you leave the Zaan region - use combi P+R + bike or public transport for smoothest experience.
