Raadhuis Jisp

The Jisp raadhuis , presumably built around 1650, replaced an earlier raadhuis in the same location. The architect remains unknown, but there are speculations about Jan Adriaensz Leeghwater. Above the front door is the date 1650 and the village coat of arms, a spoonbill, is carved into a stone. The handsome top of the façade is flanked by statues of Justice and Love.

This impressive three-storey building, possibly with a basement, served as a meeting place for the sheriff and aldermen, a court, a weighing house and the office of the orphanage. The raadhuis has undergone several restorations over the years; around 1900 it was in disrepair, but fortunately it was restored.

Today, the raadhuis houses, among other things, the Jisp Antiquities Commission and is a popular wedding location. Next to the building is also a pillory. A beautiful monument in beautiful surroundings, close to the church!
