Monet Atelier
At the MonetAtelier, replicas of Monet's 25 Zaanse paintings are on display. Some of these replicas were created by renowned Zaanish artists. The collection of paintings offers a unique glimpse of Monet's work and at the same time an impression of Zaandam in 1871.
'Zaandam is indeed particularly remarkable and there is enough to paint for a lifetime. Houses of all colours, hundreds of windmills and delightful boats.'
Wrote Monet to his friend and painter Camille Pissarro after his arrival in Zaandam on 2 June 1871. Captivated by these motifs, his stay would eventually last four months.

'Zaandam is particularly remarkable though and there is enough to paint for a lifetime. Houses of all colours, hundreds of windmills and delightful boats.'
Wrote Monet to his friend and painter Camille Pissarro after his arrival in Zaandam on 2 June 1871. Captivated by these motifs, his stay would eventually last four months.
Monet painted twenty-four landscapes and one portrait during this period. The Zaandam paintings constitute the first large group of works from one location and one uninterrupted period. Back in France, Monet increasingly applied this working method. This gave rise to famous series such as the corn mites, the poplars along the river l'Epte, Rouen cathedral and the water lilies at Giverny.
Monet is just in time to capture the old Zaandam, when mills still grinded and ships still sailed. Within a few years, the industrial revolution, then underway in almost all of Europe, with the rise of steam engines, forever changed the distinctive mill landscape of the Zaan region as Monet observed it.
But the MonetAtelier is much more than a presentation space. The atelier is a constantly evolving, inspiring location, a breeding ground for new ideas and a meeting point for Monet enthusiasts. It acts as an information and knowledge centre about Monet in Zaandam, the starting point for Monet Walks, the venue for further research into the relationship between Monet and Zaandam, painting workshops and lectures.
