Wormerveerse Vermaning

Frisian Baptist Congregation in Wormerveer in 1829 called for a competition among Dutch architects for a suitable design for a new worship house. The winning design, submitted under the slogan 'Dedicated to the Religion', was by Amsterdam architect Hendrik Springer. Hendrik's father, master carpenter Willem Springer, was then commissioned to carry out the design. And so, in 1830-'31, a substantial, 14-metre-high building in neo-classical style, with a semi-circular window and an entrance frame consisting of two Doric columns with a pediment, emerged. It impressed in relation to the neighbouring buildings; these consisted of wooden houses with a gable height of no more than five to six metres. In 1855, the Amsterdam organ builders Flaes and Brünjes built their first organ in the Wormerveerse Vermaning, a two-manual mechanical organ with originally suspended pedal. On 28 December 2009, Stichting Wormerveerse Vermaning (SWV) was founded and on the same day the church building was acquired, for a symbolic sum, from the Vereenigde Doopsgezinde Gemeente (VDG) in Wormerveer. As the VDG wanted, the building has retained its public function and concerts, lectures, exhibitions and the like are regularly held there.
