Architecture, urban planning and art meet in this walk. The original Zaanse timber building has served as a model for Zaandam's spectacularly altered city centre from 2010 onwards. Over the centuries, a striking variety of homes has been built here. From the wooden house where Czaar Peter stayed in 1697, which is preserved in a museum, to the hotel consisting of 70 gables and everything in between. These are mostly also stone houses because since the 1901 housing act, it was forbidden in the Zaan region
to build in wood. That is fortunately in the past so that nowadays wood and stone alternate beautifully in colour and shape. For those colours, Claude Monet came to work here for four months in 1871. He made 25 Zaanish paintings of which the work 'The Blue House'

Visit the Czaar Peter house and/or Monet's Atelier and walk from the Lage Horn up the dike to the Blue House.
