Krommenie and Assendelft, how could it be otherwise in the Zaan region, were originally separated by water.
Today, Provincialeweg and railway line mark the border. While Assendelft was home to many cattle farmers, Krommenie was best known for the sailcloth that gave birth to the now world leader in flooring: Forbo Flooring.
The sailcloth merchants were then called roller ship owners and many of their homes are now national monuments. The showy wooden facades have stood the test of time and you will be amazed at the ingenuity of the woodcarvers. The Agathepark is worth a trip. Chickens scratch around, there is an aviary and play equipment for children. Along the Nauernasche Vaart is light industry. The former tin factory from 1897 is one of the oldest buildings. On Saturday, visit the Forbo Expo (11 a.m.-4 p.m.) for a look at a marmoleum model home.
