Gortershoek and Domineetuin

Directly opposite the mills of the Zaanse Schans , Zaandijk is De Gortershoek, named after a gortery established there in 1669.
From then on, it has been a neighbourhood of the well-to-do, now called 'The Pearl of the Zaan Region'. You will find beautifully decorated merchant houses, a museum, a former raadhuis, a sculpture garden at an old paper warehouse and a church converted into housing. The Domineestuin is an authentic little neighbourhood where private initiative has led to the renovation of the old houses, the preservation of the ditch pattern and historicising new buildings made of wood. Around the appropriately named Karl Marxstraat, you can see fine examples of social housing from the early 20th century. NB: In summer, a foot ferry sails from Lagedijk near the lock to mill De Bonte Hen and vice versa. This shortens the walk considerably.
Visit the museum the Honig Breethuis (open Tues-Sun 13.00-16.00) and experience how the families of the paper manufacturers Honig and Breet lived around 1830.
