The Twiske
(3.9 km)Recreatiegebied Het Twiske covers an area of 650 ha, one-third of which is water. There are six marked walking routes, one of which is the Roemer route. It runs through the East Zanerpolder. Highland cattle keep part of the area open, preventing it from becoming overgrown with trees and bushes. Where they can't graze, a dense polder forest of beech, maple, ash, pedunculate oak, alder and Scots pine has developed. Fallen trees are left lying around so that insects and toads have free reign. Here you can encounter typical forest birds such as the spotted woodpecker, jay, blackhead and sparrowhawk. Via a boardwalk, you walk a bit over de Stootersplas. This water was originally a sand pit and in some places up to 35 metres deep. That's why it never freezes over and why Scandinavian wigeons winter here.
