Industrial area The Zaan region was one of the first industrial areas in the world. Hundreds of windmills produced linseed oil, paint, snuff tobacco, mustard, paper, as well as wood processing. The Zaan region has traditionally had a particularly strong attraction for foreign guests; the attraction has nearly 1 million visitors every year. They stroll around the Zaanse Schans or view it all from the tour boat that sails every hour in the high season.
